How Smart Film Works
A thin switchable layer on your existing glass, clear when powered and frosted when not.
Smart film looks like a small piece of magic the first time you see it. A glass wall you can see straight through turns frosted the moment a switch is flipped, then clears again on the next press. The technology behind it is straightforward once you know what is happening inside the film.
This guide explains how switchable PDLC smart film works, what the clear and private states actually are, how it is controlled, where it is applied and what it does and does not do. Aura Smart Film supplies and professionally installs this film on suitable existing glass throughout the Los Angeles area.
The Technology Behind Smart Film
Smart film is a PDLC film. PDLC stands for polymer dispersed liquid crystal, which describes exactly what the active layer is: microscopic droplets of liquid crystal dispersed through a clear polymer. That active layer sits between thin conductive layers, and the whole assembly is a flexible film that can be applied to the surface of existing glass.
Liquid crystals have a useful property. Left alone, the crystals inside each droplet point in random directions. When an electric field is applied across the film, they line up with it. That single change, from random to aligned, is what makes the film switch between frosted and clear.
The Clear State and the Private State
With power applied, the liquid crystals align and light passes through the film in a straight line. The film appears clear and the glass looks much as it did before the film was installed. This is the open state, used when you want the view, the connection between spaces and the sense of openness that glass provides.
With power off, the crystals return to their random arrangement and scatter light as it passes through. Instead of a clear view, you see a frosted, translucent surface. Shapes and movement behind the glass are obscured, but daylight still comes through, so the room does not go dark. This is the private state, and it is the default whenever the film is not powered.
The switch between the two is immediate and can be repeated as often as needed. There is no mechanical movement, nothing to draw or close, and nothing that changes about the glass itself. The film simply changes how it handles light.
How Smart Film Is Controlled
The film must be connected to a control system by the installer, and that control is what lets you decide when the glass is clear and when it is private. Aura confirms the control configuration for each project during the evaluation, based on how the space is used and where power is available.
Wall switch
A wall-mounted switch positioned near the glass, used the same way as a light switch. It is the simplest option and suits rooms where one person controls the space, such as a bathroom, a bedroom or a private office.
Remote
A handheld remote lets you switch the film from anywhere in the room without walking to the wall. It is convenient for conference rooms, living spaces and any glass where the switch location would otherwise be awkward.
App
An app is available for remote use, so the film can be switched from a phone. This suits spaces where you may want to set privacy before entering, such as a storefront after hours or a meeting room being prepared for a call. Availability and setup are confirmed per project.
Where Smart Film Is Applied
Because the film goes onto existing glass, it works in the places where glass already is. In homes that usually means bathroom windows, bedroom windows, home office doors, entry sidelights, interior glass doors and street-facing windows. Our residential smart film service covers these applications.
In commercial spaces the most common uses are conference rooms and private offices, glass partitions, reception areas and storefront glass that needs after-hours privacy. In every case the glass is evaluated first, since suitability depends on glass type, condition, dimensions, edges, location, moisture exposure and access to power.
What Smart Film Does and Does Not Do
Smart film is a privacy product. Its job is to obscure the view through glass on demand and to restore that view when you want it back. Being clear about what that means avoids disappointment later.
- It provides privacy, not tint. In the clear state the film is meant to look clear, not shaded or colored. If you want a permanently darker glass, a tint film is a different product.
- It provides privacy, not blackout. The frosted state scatters light rather than blocking it, so daylight still enters the room and the glass glows softly rather than going dark. A space that must be fully dark needs a blind or shade.
- It passes daylight in both states. This is one of its main advantages over curtains or permanent frosting: the room stays bright whether the glass is clear or private.
- It is not a window replacement. The film is applied to the glass you already have and does not change the glass, the frame or the seal. If the glass itself is failing, that is a glazing question, not a film question.
- It needs power to be clear. The private state is the default whenever the film is unpowered, which is worth knowing when planning how a room will be used.
How Installation Works
An Aura installation follows a simple sequence. You send us details and photos of the glass. We measure and evaluate it, confirming dimensions, condition, edges, location and the electrical and control requirements. The film is then prepared to the approved dimensions of each panel. On installation day we prepare the glass surface, apply the film, connect it to the control system and test the finished system with you.

FAQ
Common Questions
Is smart film clear when the power is on or off?
Clear with power on, frosted with power off. Applying power aligns the liquid crystals so light passes straight through. Removing power lets them scatter light, which produces the frosted private state.
Does the room go dark when the film is frosted?
No. The frosted state scatters light rather than blocking it, so daylight continues to enter the room. Smart film provides privacy, not blackout. If you need a fully dark room, you still need a blind or shade.
Can I control smart film from my phone?
An app is available for remote use, alongside wall switches and handheld remotes. The control configuration for your project is confirmed during the evaluation, and the film is connected to the control system by the installer.
Does smart film change the look of the glass when it is clear?
In the clear state the film is designed to look clear, and the glass keeps its open appearance. Because the film sits on the surface, its edge can be visible on close inspection. It is not a tint and does not shade the glass.
