Residential Smart Film Installation in Los Angeles
Switchable privacy for the windows, glass doors and interior glass your home already has.
Residential smart film gives existing home glass a second function. Leave the film clear and the window, door or partition looks the way it always has. Switch it on and the same glass turns frosted, blocking the view without blinds, curtains or permanent etching. Aura Smart Film supplies the switchable film and installs it on suitable existing residential glass throughout Los Angeles.
Homes here are built around glass: floor-to-ceiling windows, sliding doors to the yard, glass entry doors, interior glass between rooms. That openness is the point, until a neighbor's window, a busy street or a guest in the hallway makes it a problem. Smart film keeps the light and the view, and gives you privacy the moment you want it. If the technology is new to you, start with how smart film works.

What residential smart film is
Smart film is a thin switchable PDLC layer applied directly to the surface of existing glass. Connected to a control, it changes between a transparent state and a frosted, private state. Nothing about the window, door or frame is replaced. Aura supplies the film and installs it as a complete system with the control you will use every day.
This is a switchable privacy film for homes, not a tint or a decorative frost. Static films fix the glass in one condition permanently; smart film for home windows lets you decide, room by room and moment by moment.
Problems it solves at home
Most residential privacy requests come down to the same tension: the glass was chosen for light and openness, and now it exposes something. Bathrooms have their own considerations, covered on our bathroom privacy film page.
- Bedroom windows that face a neighbor, a street or a shared walkway
- Glass entry doors and sidelights that show the whole entry hall to anyone on the porch
- Sliding glass doors to a patio or yard that are open to adjacent properties
- Home offices with glass walls or doors that need to go private for calls and focused work
- Bathroom windows and interior glass where daylight matters but exposure does not work
- Living areas where blinds and curtains would cover the architecture you paid for
Common residential applications
Bedroom windows
Privacy film for bedroom windows is one of the most frequent residential requests. Smart film keeps the room bright by day and private at night, with no blinds to close.
Front and entry doors
Smart film for front doors and sidelights lets you see who is outside when the film is clear, and keeps the entry hall private when it is not.
Sliding glass doors
Smart film for sliding glass doors works on suitable fixed and moving panels, so the door still opens normally while the glass switches on demand.
Home offices
Smart film for a home office keeps glass doors and walls open to the rest of the house until a call or a deadline needs separation.
Bathroom glass
Suitable bathroom windows and interior glass can take smart film, subject to evaluation of moisture exposure and edges. Shower enclosures are assessed case by case.
Interior glass doors and partitions
Glass between a kitchen and a family room can be clear for openness and frosted for privacy without adding walls.

Who residential smart film is right for
Smart film fits homeowners who like their glass and want to keep it. If window treatments block too much light and replacing the glass is off the table, switchable film is the middle path.
It is also a practical option where privacy needs change through the day: an entry that is visible when you expect guests and private after dark, or a home office that is part of the family space until a meeting starts. It is not the right choice for every pane. Glass that is damaged, heavily textured, poorly sealed or without practical access to power may not be suitable, and we say so after evaluating it.
How Aura evaluates your existing glass
Every residential project starts with a review of the glass as it is. The type of glass, its condition, exact dimensions, the state of the edges and the frame, where the pane is located and how exposed it is to moisture all affect whether switchable film for existing residential glass will perform well. We also look at how the film will reach power and where a switch or control makes sense in the room.
Photos and rough measurements are enough to begin. We then confirm dimensions on site and tell you clearly what is and is not suitable before any film is prepared. Read more about smart film on existing glass.

Control options for the home
How you switch the film depends on the project. A wall switch is the simplest choice for a bedroom or an entry. A remote suits rooms where a switch location is awkward. An app is also available for remote use, useful for setting the entry glass private from another room or from away. Aura confirms the control configuration for each location during project review.
Why smart film for residential glass
Blinds, shades and curtains solve privacy by covering the glass, which means losing daylight and hiding the architecture. Permanent frosting solves it by giving up the view for good. Replacing the glass with switchable glass units is a far larger project. Smart film is the direct answer: the same glass, clear or private, on demand. Our guide to smart film vs smart glass explains the difference in more detail.

FAQ
Common Questions
Can smart film be installed on the windows and doors I already have?
Yes, on suitable glass. Aura installs switchable film on existing residential windows, glass doors, sliding doors and interior glass. We evaluate each pane for type, condition, edges, location, moisture exposure and access to power before confirming it is a candidate. We do not replace or install glass.
Does smart film work on a sliding glass door that opens?
It can, depending on the door. Both fixed and sliding panels may be suitable, and the door continues to operate normally once the film is installed. Moving panels are evaluated for edges, track and power connection.
Will the glass look different from my other windows when the film is clear?
In the clear state the film is transparent, so the glass keeps its open look. In the private state it appears frosted and obscures the view.
Can I put smart film on the front door glass and sidelights?
Suitable entry door glass and sidelights are a common residential application. The film lets you see out when it is clear and keeps the entry hall private when it is switched. Power access and door construction are confirmed during evaluation.
How do I control the film in different rooms?
Controls are configured per project. Options include a wall switch, a remote, and an app for remote use. We confirm the right control for each location during project review.
What does residential smart film cost?
Pricing depends on the amount of glass, the dimensions of each pane, the number of separate pieces, access, electrical requirements and control setup. Aura provides a project-specific estimate after reviewing the glass. Estimates are free.
